The garden composter,
a planted bed that composts

The ABC composter at the centre, a planter all around it. Same mechanism, same capacity: what changes is what people see.

  • The compost it produces feeds the planting directly
  • Equipment that reads as furniture, not as a plant room
  • 450 L capacity, the same as the composter on its own
The principle

The same machine, dressed as a planted bed

The garden composter is not a different product: it is the ABC composter, ringed by a circular planter. The ABC composter aerates and mixes in exactly the same way.

What changes

A circular planter, all around the composter

The planter is built into the structure and is filled with soil. A transfer grille lets the liquid from the compost be absorbed by that soil: it gradually enriches itself with nutrients, with no handling and no special watering.

  • A complete loop. Food waste becomes the compost for the planting beside it.
  • An object people accept. Nobody mistakes it for a waste container.
  • A teaching aid. An attractive illustration of the living cycle.

What does not change

Aeration, mixing, emptying: identical

The perforated aeration chimney aerates the material, the mixing screw mixes it by crank, the mature compost comes out at the bottom. Two minutes a week, just like the composter on its own.

  • 450 L capacity. The composter is the same one.
  • Emptied every 1 to 12 months. Depending on your volumes.

Who it is for

When the equipment has to be seen

The garden composter comes into its own wherever the composter is in public view, and has to be welcomed rather than tolerated.

Getting started

A bed built up in layers

The planter is filled in alternating layers, like a lasagne: the bulking material drains, the potting soil feeds. It is assembled on installation day, and never has to be done again.

  • A thick layer of bulking material at the bottom, to drain.
  • Potting soil against the holes in the composter, where the liquid comes out.
  • Alternate bulking material and potting soil up to the top of the planter.
  • Finish with potting soil, ready to plant.

The filling guide, as a PDF →

  1. Three technicians filling a garden composter’s planter, outside a school

01 Place the planter around the ABC composter.

  2. A bale of bulking material tipped into the bottom of the planter, against the composter

02 Lay down a layer of bulking material.

  3. A technician spreading potting soil in a layer over the bulking material

03 Cover it with a thick layer of potting soil, then repeat.

A reference

150 garden composters for a single local authority

The Seine-Eure local authority equipped its member towns: series production in our workshop in northern France, delivery by full lorry loads, then installation and commissioning site by site alongside the local staff.

Renting it

It is rented, like the composter on its own

The same package as the ABC composter, at a different rent: 129 € excl. VAT a month, with the bulking material, the awareness kit, the training and the maintenance. And if nobody on site is to handle the mature compost, its removal is arranged with the local operator of your choice.
