Composting for local authorities

Composting for councils, joint authorities, schools and urban districts. A public garden composter, and food waste recycled at source: one of the two routes Article 22 provides.

A worked example

What it looks like on a typical site

758kg of food waste a year, estimated for a canteen serving 100 meals a day
79€ excl. VAT a month: composter, bulking material, maintenance and support
6removals a year: how often the mature compost has to be taken away, arranged locally
Your constraints

Three constraints
you know well

Your public procurement process

You have to go through a public procurement procedure, with a precise specification. Our offer has to fit the paperwork your own rules require.

Our answer. We are used to public buyers (councils, joint authorities, urban districts). The documents you need (company details, certifications, references) supplied within 48h so you can build your tender file.

Street furniture & appearance

A public composter that sits badly in its setting is an eyesore. Your technical services and your elected members want something attractive, durable and accessible.

Our answer. The composter is built, lacquered and customised in our own workshop: five colours to choose from, in your authority’s colours if you want them. In the garden composter version, a circular planter rings the unit and takes the mature compost.

Tracking your waste policy

Your environment department has to measure how well collection is working. Without clear reporting, there is no way to decide and no way to report back to your elected assembly.

Our answer. A log sheet supplied with the composter: date, weight and destination at each emptying. You keep the record, and we give you the emission factors and the method so your own team can calculate the saving.

A worked case, with figures

A canteen serving 100 meals a day,
and what it costs

100 meals served on the school calendar, 10 staff on site the rest of the year. The figures below come from our calculator, using the same method as your online quote.

The volume
  • 100 mealsper day of service
  • 140 daysof service, school calendar
  • 10 staffon site the rest of the year

758 kg of food waste a year

That is 758 kg a year, most of it from the canteen sorting table.

The quote that follows
  • 1 ABC composterdelivered, bulking material, maintenance, training by video call and awareness kit79 €

Total79 € excl. VAT/month

48-month commitment. You keep the compost and use it on site.

Optional Removal of the mature compost, if you do not use it yourself: it is arranged with a local operator of your choice, and we help you scope the brief. As a French benchmark, a site like this one takes 6 collections a year, that is +60 € excl. VAT a month, bringing the total to 139 € excl. VAT a month.

On your site, in practice

How it works on your site

From accepting the quote to the first emptying: the location is agreed within 24 hours, delivery follows in 1 to 3 weeks.

  1. Where it goes

In the service yard or beside the canteen, away from where pupils walk.

  2. The caddies in the kitchen and at the scraping point

One in preparation, one at the sorting table. The action becomes a teaching aid: pupils see what they throw away.

  3. Awareness, pupils included

We train the staff and, if you wish, run a video session with the classes. Tackling food waste starts at the sorting table.

  4. Taking the compost away

Six removals a year in this case, timed to the school calendar and arranged with a local operator. During the holidays nothing goes in, and composting carries on with nothing to do.

Two ways of doing it

The composter on its own,
or with a local collection

Emptying is optional. If you have a green space, a kitchen garden or planted beds, the compost stays with you.

The most economical

79 € excl. VAT/month

The ABC composter delivered, the bulking material delivered, maintenance, remote training and the team awareness kit. You keep the compost and use it on site.

With local collection

139 € excl. VAT/month

The same, plus the mature compost taken away: 6 removals a year for this example, handled by a local operator you contract. Nothing piles up on your site.

See this offer

In France, collection is billed at 10 € excl. VAT a month per annual visit, from 1 to 12 collections a year depending on your actual volumes; elsewhere the removal of the mature compost is arranged with a local operator of your choice, and we help you scope the brief. Above 1,500 kg a year, a second composter is added.

Your obligation

Food waste separated at source: this now applies to you

Local authorities are both subject to source separation for their own sites and responsible for offering it to residents. School catering is the first stream concerned. What exactly applies depends on your jurisdiction.

Rules differ from one jurisdiction to the next, but the direction is the same everywhere: food waste has to be separated at source and recovered, either composted on site or collected separately. Check what applies where you operate.

Questions from the sector

What we are asked most often

How do we buy this, through public procurement?

Depending on the amount, a quote is enough or we respond to your tender procedure. The composter is available to buy or to rent over 48 months: on the rental route there is no capital outlay and the spend stays in your operating budget.

What happens during the school holidays?

Nothing to do. The composter carries on its cycle with no input.

Can it be used as a teaching aid?

Yes, and that is one of the real benefits: the sorting table makes food waste visible, and the compost produced can be used on the grounds or in the school garden.

Can we equip several schools?

Yes. One contract covering every site, the same price per site, and consolidated reporting by council or by joint authority.
