Rodent-proof composter: how to get rid of rats in your compost
Why rats get into a composter, what actually stops them, and how to choose a unit that holds up on a working site.

A rat does not get into a composter because it likes compost: it gets in because it finds four things in one place, accessible food, warmth, shelter it can dig into, and a way through. A genuinely rodent-proof composter closes all four at once, and it closes them by the way it is built: a sealed steel tank, a closed base, a solid lid, and siting on a hard surface. A garden-centre bin always leaves at least one of the four open, usually the base, and no repellent replaces a shell that cannot be gnawed through.
Four conditions, not one. Food, warmth, shelter, access. An open bin sitting on bare soil brings all four together.
The build is what decides. What the wall is made of and how thick it is, whether the base is closed, how well the lid sits, and what the bin stands on. The rest is upkeep.

Why rodents come, and where they get in
The brown rat and the house mouse are opportunists: they settle wherever the effort is lowest for the calories gained. A badly designed composter hands them a concentrate of what they are after. Food, because the leftovers from a staff restaurant are far richer in protein and fat than anything a rodent finds outdoors. Warmth, because the active phase of breakdown takes the material up to several tens of degrees, which makes the composter the warmest point on the site in January. And shelter, because loose material is easy to dig into and puts the colony out of reach of predators.
That leaves access, the only one of the four you can settle once and for all. Two orders of magnitude are enough to frame the problem: an adult rat gets through an opening of about 2 cm, a mouse through less than a centimetre, and both gnaw softwood and moulded plastic without difficulty. A garden-centre bin therefore needs no door to be open: a warped slat, a lid that lifts, or a base sitting on soil is enough. The signs come before visible infestation: burrows at the foot of the bin, droppings on the lid, grease marks along a wall. What makes a composter genuinely rodent-proof
The term is used by more or less every manufacturer, including for bins a rodent gets through in a single night. Six criteria settle it without relying on the sales pitch: what the wall is made of and how thick it is, whether the base is closed, how well the lid sits, what the bin stands on, whether air can circulate without leaving a usable opening, and what gives way first as the bin ages.

The decisive line is the one about the base. A rodent does not look for the most visible way in but the most discreet one, and it almost always comes from underneath: a bin with no base sitting on a lawn is open, however good its walls. How the ABC composter is built
The ABC composter is a 2 mm steel tank of 450 L, designed and built in our workshop in France. Its resistance to rodents rests on nothing bolted on: the tank is sealed and its base is closed, which removes the way in from underneath; the lid is solid; it stands on a hard surface, a concrete slab, tarmac or paving, so that no burrow can come out under the unit. Air circulates through an aeration chimney that runs up through the material from the bottom: aeration is continuous without needing the slightest usable opening in the wall. Mixing is mechanical and hand-cranked, with no motor, no fan and nothing to plug in, which is what separates the ABC from electromechanical composters, the powered machines that grind and dehydrate food waste.
One point deserves to be said plainly, because the photographs could suggest the opposite. Several finishes have an outer skin cut with openings, with gaps between the slats or decorative cut-outs. That cladding is not the wall: it surrounds the steel vessel, it does not replace it, and it lets the composter sit in a hotel courtyard without looking like a piece of plant. Nobody should sell you absolute tightness; what counts is that the material is held in a closed vessel, covered, standing on ground that cannot be dug out. Where to put it and how to feed it
Siting matters as much as the equipment. The ground first: a hard, continuous surface, with no open joints or deep gravel, stops a burrow coming out under the tank. Clearance next: at least 50 cm free all round for inspecting and sweeping, and never the composter pushed against a wall, since the gap becomes a run that cannot be seen from outside. And the surroundings, because rodents travel along covered lines: dense hedges, pallet stacks, cardboard stores, low walls. That leaves what goes into the bin, because a sealed composter that is badly fed is still a magnet for its immediate surroundings. Three families concentrate the risk: animal protein, fats, and cooked starches in quantity. The one habit that changes everything is covering, a layer of dry carbon-rich bulking agent over every fresh load, which blocks odours and balances the carbon to nitrogen ratio. - Keep meat, fish and dairy to a minimum, and leave out bones, which do not break down within the cycle of a site composter.
- Cover every fresh load with bulking agent, without exception, Friday evening included.
- Never leave a full caddy standing next to the composter, not even overnight.
- Mix at least once a week to break up the compacted zones a burrow digs into.
- Sweep the ground after every load: crumbs draw them in before the contents of the bin do.
- Inspect the perimeter once a month: burrows, droppings, grease marks.
If rodents are already there
An established colony is not shifted by changing the bin: it is shifted by removing the resource, then closing the access, in that order. Dealing with access without cutting off the resource simply moves the problem to the waste store or the ceiling void. The sequence below takes three weeks and is run in-house; it does not replace pest control, which is a job for a specialist contractor.
- Day 1: stop adding animal protein and fats, and cover the whole surface with a thick layer of bulking agent.
- Day 1: clear away anything around the unit that serves as shelter or as a run, pallets, cardboard, sacks, low planting.
- Day 2: clean the ground and rinse the caddies, then bring in daily sweeping.
- Week 1: fill in the burrows you can see and check that the composter is standing on a hard, continuous surface.
- Week 1: if the bin is open at the base or holed, replace it, because no amount of good practice makes up for a wall that has been breached.
- Week 3: inspect the perimeter again. With no fresh traces, go back to the monthly rhythm.

What the rules require
Separating food waste at source is no longer a matter of choice for businesses. England brought workplaces into Simpler Recycling in 2025, Wales has required separate food waste collection from workplaces since its Workplace Recycling rules of 2024, Scotland since the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, and Northern Ireland runs its own regime; Ireland applies the EU waste framework through its national food waste regulations. Thresholds, start dates and exemptions differ from one nation to the next, and the ones that bind your site are the ones written where it stands. The question is no longer whether to separate, but into what: a composter that draws rodents is a separation system that ends up abandoned, and an abandoned system takes the site straight back to where it started.
Penalties are set nation by nation, and range from a fixed penalty or a compliance notice to prosecution, so the figure that applies to you is the one your own regulator publishes, not a number carried over from another market. Added to that, for any site handling food, is the hygiene side: rodents near a food storage area fall under the pest control plan and show up in audit reports, which is often what forces the issue long before a waste inspector does.
What a rodent-proof composter costs
The ABC composter is rented at 79 € excl. VAT a month on a 48-month commitment, and it can be bought as well; the rent covers the composter delivered, the bulking agent, the maintenance and the awareness work with your teams. In France, collection is a separate option billed at 10 € excl. VAT a month per annual visit, from 1 to 12 visits a year, and the number of visits is not chosen: it follows a fixed grid, 3 visits for a site at 500 kg a year, 4 at 750 kg, 12 at 1,200 kg. Two limits frame the reasoning. One composter absorbs up to 1,500 kg a year; beyond that you add a second and everything doubles. Above 3,000 kg a year, on-site composting is no longer the right answer and you should be looking at a food waste collection sized for that volume.
Common questions
Can a timber composter be rodent-proof?
With a wall of slats a few millimetres thick, no: a rat gnaws softwood, and a bin sitting straight on soil hands it the easiest way in as well, from underneath. Timber is only acceptable as outer cladding, fitted around a sealed metal tank that remains the real barrier.
Do essential oils and natural repellents work?
Peppermint, pepper, vinegar or repellent plants work at the margin and for a few days, as long as it takes for the smell to fade or the rain to wash it off. None of them holds up against a rat that has identified a steady source of food.
Can you put meat and fish in a rodent-proof composter?
In small quantities and always covered with bulking agent, a sealed tank takes them better than an open bin. The rule is still to keep them to a minimum: they are the smelliest and the greasiest loads. Bones do not compost within the cycle of a site composter.
Does the ABC composter need electricity?
No. Nothing to plug in, no water supply, no drain, no groundworks. Air circulates through an aeration chimney, with no fan, and mixing is mechanical and hand-cranked.
What happens to the material that comes out of the composter?
After a few months it is taken out, and it still needs a final destination: a licensed composting or sanitisation facility, or land spreading by an operator you contract locally. What leaves the composter is not a mature, standard-compliant compost.
Where to start
Start with a walk round what you already have, ten minutes and on foot: look under the bin, then at the wall, the lid and the perimeter. If it is standing on soil, grass or gravel, you already have your answer: it has to be moved onto a hard surface before anything else. Those four observations tell you whether you have a management problem or an equipment problem.
